about last week's top stories about and from Syria in English and Arabic.

Top Stories
President Bashar Assad has delivered his third address, dividing the
demonstrators into peaceful protestors, outlaws and saboteurs. Nineteen Syrians
were killed when security forces opened fire to disperse demonstrations in
various parts of Syria on the Friday of Saleh Al-Ali. Meanwhile the Syrian army
is widening its operations in Idlib, and six people have been killed in Ariha.
Tanks have surrounded the city of Maarrat al-Numan and continued north. Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has held discussions with General Hassan
Turkmani, a representative of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Elsewhere Syrian
refugees have continued to flock to Turkey fleeing the repression of the Syrian
authorities. The Lebanese army has sent its forces onto Syria Street in
Tripoli, following the events which took place there between supporters and
opponents of the Syrian revolution. Secretary-General of the Arab League Amr
Moussa has expressed his concern regarding events in Syria. Britain has hinted
at the possibility of the imposition of a no-fly zone over Syria. Meanwhile
German Defence Minister Thomas de Maizière has rejected Berlin’s participation
in any operation undertaken by NATO in the country.
Economy
Commercial activity between Jordan and Syria has resumed, via the Syrian city
of Deraa and the Jordanian city of Al-Ramtha, after a suspension of over two
months. A meeting between Director General of the Syrian Investment Agency
Ahmed Diab and a delegation from the South Korean company Taesung has looked
into investment opportunities and the possibility of setting up vital projects.
Meanwhile the European Business Centre for Training and Development will hold a
conference next July regarding administrative, economic and social reform,
under the auspices of the Ministry of State for Administrative Development
Affairs. Elsewhere, the representatives of South Korea and Venezuela’s largest
companies have expressed their desire and complete readiness to invest in a
variety of fields in Syria, in particular in energy, housing and oil
exploration.
Society
Numerous demonstrations have taken place in a number of Syrian cities and towns
criticising President Bashar Assad’s address. This comes after Syrian
businessman Rami Makhlouf, the cousin of President Bashar Assad, stated that he
is devoting himself to charitable work, and that he will no longer be a burden
on the President. Meanwhile a video clip has been published showing the death
of Mohammed Al-Rassou at the hands of Syrian security forces, evoking memories
of the child Hamza Al-Khateeb. Syrian opposition activists have stressed that
the protest movement in Syria will expand in the coming weeks, confirming that
there have been splits within the Syrian army. A female Syrian Kurdish writer
has uncovered the rape of women by the “spectre” of the regime.
Syria in the International Press
The Syrian government will be forced to seek foreign aid to prevent its economy
from collapsing as a result of the protests. Meanwhile experts have cast doubt
on the ability of the Syrian regime, which has so far demonstrated cohesion, to
withstand in the event that the disturbances continue. Russia has continued its
rejection of voting on a resolution regarding Syria. Numerous media outlets
have described Syrian businessman and relative of the President, Rami Makhlouf,
as a Syrian Ahmad Ezz, or “Mr. Five Percent”.
From the Syrian Press
The Anti-Corruption Committee considers the method of selecting managers to be
one of the foremost causes of corruption, and the first method of dealing with
the problem. Nadal Mubarak, Director of Grains in Deraa, has announced that
there are six permanent purchase centres in various areas of the province.
Meanwhile the branch of the Public Housing Institution in Hama has begun the
works of constructing 584 workers’ houses in the suburb of Hay Al-Wafa at a
cost of US$35 million. Meanwhile the semi-governmental local press is
continuing to relate stories told by terrorists regarding their activities in
the city of Jisr Al-Shughour.

[4]وجه الرئيس بشار الأسد بخطابه الثالث مقسما المحتجين في سورية ثلاثة أقسام،
متظاهرين سلميين، وخارجين على القانون ومخربين. وكانت قوات الأمن قد [5]قتلت تسعة
عشر سورياً عندما أطلقت النار لتفريق تظاهرات خرجت في أنحاء متفرقة من سورية في
جمعة صالح العلي. فيما الجيش السوري [6]يوسع عملياته بإدلب ويقتل ستة أشخاص في
أريحا. كما [7]حاصرت الدبابات مدينة معرة النعمان واتجهت شمالا. [8]أجرى رئيس
الوزراء التركي رجب طيب أردوغان محادثات مع العماد حسن تركماني مبعوث الرئيس
السوري بشار الأسد. فيما استمر [9]توافد اللاجئين السوريين إلى تركيا هربا من قمع
السلطات السورية. كما [10]نشر الجيش اللبناني قواته في شارع سورية بطرابلس إثر
الأحداث هناك بين موالين للثورة السورية ومعارضين لها. وفي شأن اخر [11]أعرب أمين
عام الجامعة العربية عمرو موسى عن قلقه إزاء ما يحدث في سورية، كما [12]لمحت
بريطانيا إلى احتمال فرض حظر جوي على سورية، فيما [13]استبعد وزير الدفاع
الألماني توماس دي ميزير مشاركة برلين في أية عملية يقوم بها حلف الأطلسي في
سورية
اقتصاد
[14]عاد النشاط التجاري بين الأردن وسورية عبر مدينتي درعا السورية والرمثا
الأردنية بعد توقف دام أكثر من شهرين. كما [15]بحث المدير العام لهيئة الإستثمار
السورية أحمد دياب مع وفد شركة تاو سونغ الكورية الجنوبية فرص الاستثمار وإمكانية
إقامة مشاريع حيوية. من جهة أخرى، [16]يقيم مركز الأعمال الأوربي للتدريب
والتطوير في تموز القادم مؤتمرا حول الإصلاح الإداري والاقتصادي والاجتماعي وذلك
برعاية وزارة الدولة لشؤون التنمية الإدارية. وفي سياق متصل [17]أبدى ممثلو كبرى
الشركات في كوريا الجنوبية وفنزويلا رغبتهم واستعدادهم التام للاستثمار في مجالات
متعددة في سورية وخصوصا في الطاقة والإسكان والتنقيب عن النفط

[18]نددت مظاهرات عدة خرجت في أكثر من مدينة وبلدة في سورية بخطاب الرئيس بشار
الأسد. وذلك بعد أن [19]صرّح رجل الأعمال السوري رامي مخلوف ابن خال الرئيس تفرغه
للعمل الخيري مضيفا أنه لن يكون عبئا على الرئيس بعد اليوم. وجاء نشر مقطع فيديو
على الإنترنت يعرض [20]قتل محمد الرسّو على يد قوات الأمن السوري ليعيد حادثة
مقتل الطفل حمزة الخطيب إلى الأذهان. شدد المعارضون السوريون على أن الحركة
الاحتجاجية في سورية [21]ستتسع في الأسابيع المقبلة مؤكدين إمكانية حصول انشقاقات
في الجيش السوري. كما [22]كشفت كاتبة سوية كردية عن اغتصاب نساء من قبل الشبيحة

الحكومة السورية [23]ستضطر للبحث عن مساعدات خارجية لمنع اقتصادها من الانهيار
بسبب الاحتجاجات. فيما [24]يشكك الخبراء في قدرة النظام السوري الذي يظهر تماسكا
في الوقت الحالي على المقاومة في حال استمرت الاضطرابات. [25]واصلت روسيا رفضها
للتصويت على قرار بشأن سورية، ومن جهة اخرى [26]وصفت وسائل إعلامية عدة رجل
الأعمال السوري وقريب الرئيس رامي مخلوف بـ أحمد عز سورية أو السيد خمسة بالمائة

لجنة مكافحة الفساد [27]تعتبر طريقة اختيار المديرين أحد أبرز أسباب الفساد وأول
طرق علاجه. المهندس نضال مبارك مدير الحبوب بمحافظة درعا [28]يعلن أن هناك 6
مراكز شراء دائمة في مختلف مناطق المحافظة بينما [29]بدأ فرع المؤسسة العامة
للإسكان بحماة المباشرة ببناء خمسمائة وأربع وثمانين مسكناً عمالياً في ضاحية حي
