Syrian Revolution News Round-up

Day 101: Thursday, 23 June 2011

Strike and War

Protesters observe a general strike, while Assad courts war with neighboring
Turkey

Protests communities all across Syria observe a national strike, as security
and Assad loyalists forced shop owners to reopen. Syrian army units storm
another border town (Khirbet Al-Jouz) creating a tense showdown with Turkish
units and driving across hundreds more refugees. A wave of mass arrests is
taking place in Aleppo and environs, and roadblocks have been established on
the highway connecting Aleppo with Turkey, in an attempt to prevent mass
demonstrations planned for tomorrow and keep control of the city squarely in
the hands of Assad loyalists.

Assad loyalists might be able to orchestrate a demonstration or two every few
weeks, but protesters are out there every day and night, in every nuke and
corner of Syria under no one’s protection, and in the face of all danger. We
often hear talk about protesters getting tired or disheartened by Bashar’s
tenacity, by the violent, by world silence, but realities on the ground belie
that. The protest movement continues to spread to more neighborhoods and
communities all over the country. We said it before and we say it again:
Assad’s control does not extend far beyond the shadows of his tanks. Where his
tanks are absent, protesters rule. Heavens only know what sort of vengeance his
tanks will wreak tomorrow. Could it Hama’s turn again?

Richard Grenell, the longest serving U.S. Spokesman in the history of the
United Nations, makes the following recommendations to the Obama
Administration. Time has indeed come for these kind steps:

1. Order Ford home immediately, and shut down the Embassy.

2. Publicly call upon Assad to resign and ask other countries to do the same.

3. Call upon the Europeans and others to pull their Ambassadors from Damascus
too.

4. Restrict the movement of the Syrian Ambassador to Washington and the Syrian
Ambassador to the UN to a small radius around their offices.

5. Ask European capitals to restrict the movement of Syrian Ambassadors in
their countries too.

6. Force the UN resolution on Syria to a vote and dare the Russians to veto it.

7. Move USAid employees into southern Turkey to care for the Syrian refugees
arriving daily.

8. Schedule an Aljazeera TV interview with President Obama to explain US
actions and why Assad must go.

9. Demand the IAEA inspect Al Kubar site and offer an immediate UN resolution
authorizing it.

[3]Weekly Brief

The Week Ending 19 June 2011

Greetings from the Strategic Research and Communication Centre! Here is a brief
about last week's top stories about and from Syria in English and Arabic.

20 June 2011

Top Stories

President Bashar Assad has delivered his third address, dividing the
demonstrators into peaceful protestors, outlaws and saboteurs. Nineteen Syrians
were killed when security forces opened fire to disperse demonstrations in
various parts of Syria on the Friday of Saleh Al-Ali. Meanwhile the Syrian army
is widening its operations in Idlib, and six people have been killed in Ariha.
Tanks have surrounded the city of Maarrat al-Numan and continued north. Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has held discussions with General Hassan
Turkmani, a representative of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Elsewhere Syrian
refugees have continued to flock to Turkey fleeing the repression of the Syrian
authorities. The Lebanese army has sent its forces onto Syria Street in
Tripoli, following the events which took place there between supporters and
opponents of the Syrian revolution. Secretary-General of the Arab League Amr
Moussa has expressed his concern regarding events in Syria. Britain has hinted
at the possibility of the imposition of a no-fly zone over Syria. Meanwhile
German Defence Minister Thomas de Maizière has rejected Berlin’s participation
in any operation undertaken by NATO in the country.

Economy

Commercial activity between Jordan and Syria has resumed, via the Syrian city
of Deraa and the Jordanian city of Al-Ramtha, after a suspension of over two
months. A meeting between Director General of the Syrian Investment Agency
Ahmed Diab and a delegation from the South Korean company Taesung has looked
into investment opportunities and the possibility of setting up vital projects.
Meanwhile the European Business Centre for Training and Development will hold a
conference next July regarding administrative, economic and social reform,
under the auspices of the Ministry of State for Administrative Development
Affairs. Elsewhere, the representatives of South Korea and Venezuela’s largest
companies have expressed their desire and complete readiness to invest in a
variety of fields in Syria, in particular in energy, housing and oil
exploration.

Society

Numerous demonstrations have taken place in a number of Syrian cities and towns
criticising President Bashar Assad’s address. This comes after Syrian
businessman Rami Makhlouf, the cousin of President Bashar Assad, stated that he
is devoting himself to charitable work, and that he will no longer be a burden
on the President. Meanwhile a video clip has been published showing the death
of Mohammed Al-Rassou at the hands of Syrian security forces, evoking memories
of the child Hamza Al-Khateeb. Syrian opposition activists have stressed that
the protest movement in Syria will expand in the coming weeks, confirming that
there have been splits within the Syrian army. A female Syrian Kurdish writer
has uncovered the rape of women by the “spectre” of the regime.

Syria in the International Press

The Syrian government will be forced to seek foreign aid to prevent its economy
from collapsing as a result of the protests. Meanwhile experts have cast doubt
on the ability of the Syrian regime, which has so far demonstrated cohesion, to
withstand in the event that the disturbances continue. Russia has continued its
rejection of voting on a resolution regarding Syria. Numerous media outlets
have described Syrian businessman and relative of the President, Rami Makhlouf,
as a Syrian Ahmad Ezz, or “Mr. Five Percent”.

From the Syrian Press

The Anti-Corruption Committee considers the method of selecting managers to be
one of the foremost causes of corruption, and the first method of dealing with
the problem. Nadal Mubarak, Director of Grains in Deraa, has announced that
there are six permanent purchase centres in various areas of the province.
Meanwhile the branch of the Public Housing Institution in Hama has begun the
works of constructing 584 workers’ houses in the suburb of Hay Al-Wafa at a
cost of US$35 million. Meanwhile the semi-governmental local press is
continuing to relate stories told by terrorists regarding their activities in
the city of Jisr Al-Shughour.

Syrian Revolution News Round-up

Day 99: Tuesday, 21 June 2011

The Long Goodbye Continues!

Assad’s new strategy, sort of, calls for fighting protests with pro-Assad
rallies and promote civil strife.

Assad issues new amnesty for offenses committed before June 20. Assad
loyalists and the security forces open fire on unarmed protesters killing 7 in
the cities of Homs, Hama and Mayadeen. Meanwhile, Syrian army continues its
scorched earth crackdown on communities along the Turkish border. Russian PM,
Valdimir Putin, urges international community to increase pressure on the
Assads to stop their violent crackdown, saying that Russian has no special
relations with or interests in Syria, all while rejecting military
intervention. Paris urges UN to break its silence on Syria. UN Secretary
General joins Turkish, Canadian and European officials in expressing
disappointment in Assad’s speech and demanding true democratic reforms.

[4]In Syria, Assad must go

Obama should do what he has so far refused to do: call on Syrian President
Bashar Assad to resign.

[5]Northern Syria deserted thanks to scorched earth campaign

A province in northern Syria has been almost entirely turned into a ghost town
after a scorched-earth campaign by government forces, a diplomatic mission to
the area has found.

[6]UN Fiddles While Syria Burns

Point being, global leaders should think twice before invading countries like
Libya and telling the world it was done for humanitarian purposes. They should
think twice before wholeheartedly backing a militarized opposition movement
while standing silent and providing limited support to an entirely peaceful
one.

[7]Another Deeply Disappointing Speech by Bashar al-Assad

In addressing the issue of why reform in Syria has been so slow, Assad said
there was "no reason" - a reference to his speech on March 30 in which he
dismissed the notion that a group of hardliners or "old guard" figures were
holding Assad back.

[8]Seven protesters killed in Syria during rallies

(Reuters) - Syrian security forces shot dead seven people on Tuesday during
clashes in two cities between President Bashar al-Assad's loyalists and
protesters demanding his removal, a leading activist said.

[9]The longer the Assads hang on to power in Syria, the bloodier it will be

So the test is: In any reform President Assad has in mind, will he sack his
brother, the murderous Maher al-Assad, who is directing the army’s response?
The answer is clearly “no”, and his promises are therefore equally clearly
hollow.

[10]The economic effects of Syria's turmoil are clearly visible

Tourism is a key branch of Syria's economy and when hotels lay off workers and
restaurants send waiters on vacation, the middle class is likely to join in the
protests eventually.

[11]EU Close To Expanding Syria Sanctions

The European Union is close to a deal on a new list of sanctions on Syria that
would likely include 10 individuals and entities, including three from Iran, EU
diplomats told Dow Jones Newswires. The new sanctions would take effect Friday
when the names would be published in the EU’s Official Journal. This round of
sanctions, the third in the last seven weeks, was reportedly under
consideration as of last week.

[12]US says Turkey’s patience wearing thin on Syria

“We share the concerns of the Turkish government. I think you see that their
concern is mounting, particularly as they've had to handle all of these
refugees and have done so with such a big - a big heart. But clearly, Turkish
patience appears to be wearing thin, and we share all of their humanitarian and
political concerns," Nuland said.

Syrian Revolution News Round-up

Day 98: Monday, 20 June 2011

Deaf, Dumb and Criminally Insane!

Bashar Al-Assad reiterates his commitment to the violent crackdown against
unarmed protesters.

Assad speech meets with international condemnation and domestic ire. People all
over Syria take to the streets and express their rejection of Assad speech,
leading to mass arrests by security officers, including 150 students in the
University of Aleppo.[4] Security forces sweep Aleppo as Assad promises reform.

A senior Turkish official said on Sunday that Assad had less than a week to
start implementing long-promised political reforms before "foreign
intervention" begins, although he did not specify what this might mean.

We, the Conspirators, the Germs, the 64,000 Outlaws, hereby acknowledge that,
for all his insanity and all the nonsense and poison he spewed, Bashar Al-Assad
managed in his latest speech to make two good points at least: First when he
said that “There is no political solution for those who carry weapons and
kill.”This is exactly how we feel, and why we refuse to dialogue with the
Assads. He also made ample sense when said: “If a few thousands of those [i.e.
the 64,000 outlaws] wanted to carry weapons and engage in sabotage, you can
imagine what damage can be caused to the state.” This is exactly our point. The
protesters are unarmed, for had they not been unarmed, they would have wreaked
havoc on the country. It’s Assad’s own armies who are doing so.

But then, Assad went on to underscore his criminal tendencies and his
wholehearted commitment to the crackdown by saying:
“This is the most important, even if the crisis went on for months or years, we
should accommodate ourselves to it, we should corner it and make it limited to
those who are concerned with the crisis. Now we have an army there. Until the
army returns to their barracks, we have to support this army and ask for its
support everywhere.”

In short, Bashar Al-Assad reiterated his earlier declaration of war against his
people. So, it seems appropriate here to reiterate our commitment to the
Revolution meant to oust him and topple his regime.

This is Bashar Al-Assad’s own account of what happened in the Idlib Province

(other than his words, there is not a single shred of proof as to the veracity
of this account, not a single eyewitness report, nor a video or images of the
alleged sophisticated equipment he refers to):
“They started this in Jisr al-Shughour by committing the atrocious massacres
whose images we saw in the media, when they killed security men and destroyed
the Post Office. The Post Office is public property: people living in the city
use it. There is a great deal of hatred. The important thing is that they
possessed sophisticated weapons which did not exist before. They had
sophisticated communication systems. They moved to another kind of action. Near
the town of Ma’aret al-Nou’man, they tried to strategic fuel and gas depots.
They were able to take control of them. They surrounded the army units which
tried to restore them. We were surprised that they have modern four wheel drive
vehicles on which they installed sophisticated weapons capable of dealing with
helicopters. They also had communication equipment. They tried to commit
another massacre in Ma’aret al-Nou’man against a security check points. They
almost succeeded had not the people of the town intervened to protect the
patrol by hiding them in their houses. Some of the town people paid the price
by being tortured and having their bones broken. I appreciate the work of all
of those who took this patriotic stance and hope to meet them soon.”.

The Protesters as viewed by the All-Wise Bashar Al-Assad

(Besides being germs and microbes…):
The first constitute a part of our national component and all of the demands I
heard from them were raised underneath the national umbrella… Nevertheless,
there is a desire that it should be more comprehensive…. The second component
consists of outlaws and wanted for various criminal cases who found in the
state’s institutions an enemy and a target because they constitute an obstacle
for their illegitimate interests and because they are sought by the state’s
institutions…. You may be asking about the number of these outlaws and wanted
individuals? I myself was surprised with this number. I thought they were a few
thousand in the past. The number at the beginning of the crisis was more than
64,400 people. Imagine this number of wanted persons for various criminal cases
the verdict of which ranges between few months and execution, and they had
escaped justice; the verdict of 24 thousand of those is three years and above.
Of course, a few days ago that number dropped slightly to less than 63,000
because some turned themselves in to authorities. Thus, the number is 64,000,
may be more or less, and this equals in military terms almost five military
divisions, almost a whole army. If a few thousands of those wanted to carry
weapons and engage in sabotage, you can imagine what damage can be caused to
the state…. The third and more dangerous component, despite its small size,
consists of those who have extremist and takfiri ideology. We have known and
experienced this kind of ideology decades ago when it tried to infiltrate
Syria; and Syria was able to eliminate it thanks to the wisdom and intelligence
of the Syrian people. The ideology we see today is no different from that we
saw decades ago. It is exactly the same.

This is Bashar Al-Assad’s own account of the current state of the economy

(Obviously the protests and the sanctions are hurting):

“The most dangerous thing we will face is the weakness or the collapse of the
Syrian economy. A large part of the problem is psychological; and we should not
allow fear or frustration to defeat us. We should defeat the problem by
returning to normal life. Returning to normalcy has a moral impact, and the
economy is affected by the psychological condition of the population. We should
go back to normal life as far as possible… Here I want to express my thanks and
appreciation for all the citizens who have taken part in the campaign to
support the Syrian pound. There are people who have less than a thousand Syrian
pounds, yet they contributed. Some have thousands and they did the same thing.
One day, after we overcome the crisis, God willing, we should ask all those who
have money about the role they played, how they contributed to this
campaign.”

One day, after we overcome the crisis, God willing, we should ask all those who
have money about the role they played, how they contributed to this
campaign.”
